How Does an Orthodontist Take the Braces Off?

For those who wear braces, the point where it’s time for braces to be removed, is a much anticipated one. Compared to the process of fitting the braces, the process of getting the braces off your teeth is actually a simple and quick one. There is very little pan associated with getting your braces off. If you have fears that your orthodontist will yank off your braces, abandon these. The process is quite free and painless.

To remove your braces, first your orthodontist will use special pliers to separate the bracket and the tooth. All you will feel is a quick snip of the wire, as the bracket and brace comes off. You won’t feel any pain and the process is very quick. If your braces come with bands that are made to fit around each tooth, then your orthodontist may need special pliers to remove the bands. In case the band has been bonded to the tooth with strong adhesive, you may feel some discomfort or pressure during this process.
Once your orthodontist has removed all the metal, he may have to remove the cement or glue that is left behind on the teeth. This glue or cement will be scraped off using special pliers. Your orthodontist may also use a hand piece to polish your teeth and remove the cement debris, without causing damage to your teeth. This part of the process may involve some discomfort if you have sensitive teeth. Otherwise, you won’t feel a thing. The process of scraping the glue off the teeth takes just about 5 minutes. Your orthodontist may then use a hand piece to polish the enamel, smooth off the tooth, and restore the shining appearance of the tooth enamel.

Once your braces are removed, your orthodontist will make you a retainer.  Depending on your situation, your orthodontist will fit you with invisible retainers which are not clearly visible, or bonded retainers. These retainers are meant to be used as your orthodontist advises. Failure to wear your retainers regularly can make up your teeth crooked again.
After your braces are removed, your orthodontist will take photographs of your teeth as they now look after the braces treatment is complete. He may also take dental x-rays or x-rays of your face to add to your records. He may also make impressions of your teeth to use as study models. The records will be used to determine how successful your treatment has been, and orthodontists will refer to this again when you have other dental problems in the future.
